Shilling began her career on the stage, performing in notable productions such as "Miss Lulu Betts" and "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch."

This was followed by a prominent role in the 1930 crime drama "Shadow of the Law," opposite William Powell, which helped launch her career as a leading lady in B-movies. In 1931, she was recognized as one of the "WAMPAS Baby Stars," a prestigious accolade that highlighted her potential alongside future icons like Marian Marsh.
