Chris Walas is a distinguished American film director, special effects artist, and make-up designer, born in Chicago, Illinois. He gained significant recognition during the 1980s for his groundbreaking work in special effects, contributing to iconic films such as "Airplane!" (1980), "Dragonslayer" (1981), and "Return of the Jedi" (1983). One of his most memorable achievements was the chilling scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), where the faces of Nazi villains dramatically melt due to the supernatural heat of the Ark of the Covenant.

In 1984, Walas showcased his creative prowess by designing the beloved gremlins for the film "Gremlins," which went on to earn an impressive $153.1 million at the box office. Following his success with "The Fly" (1986), Walas transitioned to directing with "The Fly II" (1989), which grossed approximately $39 million worldwide. His directorial endeavors also included the horror-comedy "The Vagrant" (1992), which, despite a limited theater release, showcased his unique storytelling ability.

Throughout the 1990s, Walas continued to work on various projects, including the black comedy "Arachnophobia" (1990) and the sci-fi film "Naked Lunch" (1991). However, many of these films did not achieve significant commercial success. By the 2000s, his contributions to special effects diminished, with his last known work being the creation of angels for the horror film "Dark Heaven" (2002). Walas remains a notable figure in the realm of film effects and direction.
