Ivor Dean
Ivor Donald Dean (21 December 1917 – 10 August 1974) was a distinguished British actor renowned for his work in stage, film, and television. With his distinctive somber presence, Dean frequently portrayed weary police officials or dutiful butlers. He is most celebrated for his role as Chief Inspector Claud Eustace Teal on the iconic 1960s series The Saint, where he starred alongside Roger Moore. Dean's tenure on the show lasted nearly its entirety, with only a few early episodes featuring different actors before he was cast in the role that would define his career.
As the ever-vigilant Teal, Dean provided a perfect counterbalance to Moore’s charming Simon Templar, often portrayed as a step behind yet respectful of his clever adversary. He revisited this dynamic in the series Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (1968–69) as Inspector Large, where his character exhibited an even more contentious relationship with the less suave Jeff Randall.
In addition to his notable roles, Dean made guest appearances in various ITC productions, including Jason King and The Persuaders!, and appeared as a butler in the sitcom Doctor at Large. He also had a memorable stint on Coronation Street as estate agent Alfred Wormold. Notably, he portrayed Long John Silver in a Franco-German adaptation of Treasure Island (1966) and collaborated with producer Robert S. Baker on a sequel script that remained unproduced at the time of his passing.
Dean was married to actress Patricia Hamilton, with whom he had three daughters. He passed away from heart failure at the age of 56 in Truro, Cornwall, in August 1974.
