Douglas Reith is a talented British actor and educator, renowned for his portrayal of Lord Merton in the acclaimed television drama Downton Abbey, which aired from 2010 to 2015, and in its subsequent feature films.

Born in Melton, Suffolk, Reith pursued his passion for acting at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. He launched his acting career in the late 1970s with a role in the film International Velvet (1978), sharing the screen with notable actors Tatum O'Neal and Christopher Plummer.

Before fully immersing himself in acting, Reith spent five years as an announcer and presenter at BBC Radio 3. In 1989, he transitioned to academia, studying Greats at Christ Church, Oxford, for four years. Following this, he took on various teaching roles, including a position at Westminster School, before returning to the world of acting.

Reith joined the cast of Downton Abbey in 2012, where he received critical acclaim alongside his fellow cast members, earning a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards. He reprised his role in the films Downton Abbey (2019) and Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). Additionally, in 2017, he appeared in Tim Burton's live-action adaptation of Dumbo (2019) and was featured in SAS: Red Notice (2021).
