Johnny Issaluk
Johnny Issaluk is a prominent Inuk actor, athlete, and cultural educator hailing from Igluligaarjuk, also referred to as Chesterfield Inlet, located on the shores of Hudson’s Bay in Nunavut. Raised in a traditional manner, he spent his formative years immersed in the landscape, acquiring skills in hunting, fishing, and camping alongside his elders—practices integral to Inuit culture for generations. He balanced this traditional upbringing with formal education, attending Residential Secondary School and Nunavut Arctic College, where he studied tourism, guiding, and environmental technology.
Johnny is deeply involved in mental health initiatives, suicide prevention efforts, and healing practices through counseling and cultural activities. He is in the process of launching Nurraq Outfitting, a consulting venture that encompasses motivational speaking, land excursions, and demonstrations of Arctic sports.
In addition to his entrepreneurial pursuits, Johnny actively volunteers and mentors youth in his community, imparting knowledge of Arctic games and traditional practices at local daycares and gyms. He is particularly passionate about the "Students on Ice" program, where he serves as an Arctic ambassador, promoting environmental stewardship among young people globally.
His acting debut came with the short film "Kajutaijuq," a blend of Inuit legend and thriller, which premiered at TIFF in 2014. As an accomplished athlete, Johnny has dedicated over two decades to Inuit Games, securing over 200 medals in regional and national contests. Recently, he triumphed at the inaugural Beringia Arctic Games in Chukotka, Russia, earning three gold medals. Recognized for his contributions to the well-being of Nunavummiut, he received the Diamond Jubilee Medal as one of its inaugural recipients. Johnny resides in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with his wife, son, and their dog, and is the proud father of five children.
