Yu Lan, originally named Yu Peiwen, was a prominent Chinese film actress born on June 3, 1921, in an educated household in Xiuyan County, Liaoning Province. Following the death of her mother in 1929, she moved to Shenyang to live with her grandfather. In February 1939, she became a member of the Communist Party of China, marking the beginning of her dedication to social causes.

Her artistic journey commenced with amateur performances during her school years, leading to her official debut in March 1940 at the Yan'an Luyi Experimental Theater. After the Sino-Japanese conflict, Yu Lan relocated to Shenyang with the Northeast Cadre Corps and became part of the Northeast Literary and Art Troupe No. 1, where she continued to hone her craft.

Yu Lan's contributions to the film industry were widely recognized. In 1992, she received the esteemed title of "Model Worker" from the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, acknowledging her significant impact on the arts. Her career culminated in 2007 when she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Golden Phoenix Award, celebrating her enduring legacy and influence in Chinese cinema. Throughout her life, Yu Lan remained dedicated to her craft and committed to the principles of her early political beliefs until her passing in 2020.
