James Child Drury Jr. (April 18, 1934 – April 6, 2020) was a prominent American actor, celebrated primarily for his portrayal of the titular character in the iconic Western series The Virginian. This landmark show aired on NBC from 1962 to 1971 and became a defining role for Drury, showcasing his talent in a genre that captivated audiences.

Born in New York City to James Child Drury and Beatrice Crawford Drury, he spent his formative years between the bustling city and a farm in Salem, Oregon, owned by his mother. At the age of ten, Drury faced a significant health challenge when he contracted polio, but he persevered, ultimately pursuing a degree in drama at New York University, later enhancing his education at UCLA while embarking on his film career at MGM.

Drury's personal life included three marriages. He first wed Cristall Othones in 1957, with whom he had two sons, Timothy and James III, before their divorce in 1964. He later married Phyllis Jacqueline Mitchell in 1968, though this union ended in divorce in 1979. His final marriage to Carl Ann Head in 1979 lasted until her passing in 2019. Drury also embraced family life as a stepfather to three children from his previous marriages.
