Stephen Michael Gleason, born on March 19, 1977, is a former American football safety celebrated for his impactful career with the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL). After going undrafted, Gleason signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2000, but it was with the Saints that he made a lasting mark from 2000 until his retirement in 2008. One of his most significant moments came in a 2006 game when he famously blocked a punt, a play that resonated deeply with the New Orleans community as it symbolized resilience in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Following his NFL career, Gleason's life took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011. In recognition of his efforts to raise awareness about the disease, he received the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal in 2019. Through his activism and advocacy, Gleason has become an inspirational figure, using his platform to support others facing similar battles and to promote research for ALS. His legacy not only includes his athletic achievements but also his courage and commitment to making a difference in the lives of those affected by this debilitating illness.
