Maria Tortuga
Maria Tortuga was born on September 14, 1949, in Seattle, Washington, into a vibrant family where her mother was part of the pioneering Mexican folk dance company in the United States. Growing up alongside three siblings, Maria's artistic journey took a significant turn after high school when she relocated to California to delve into conceptual art. There, she studied under feminist icon Judy Chicago at the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles.
In addition to her visual arts education, Maria honed her skills in Spanish and flamenco dancing under the guidance of celebrated performer Roberto Amaral during the late 1970s. She also took on the role of flamenco soloist for the Layalina Folkloric Ensemble. After earning her MFA, she worked as the principal designer at various carpet mills while also exploring her sexuality through modeling and performing in adult films, collaborating with notable directors like Gerard Damiano and William Margold.
In 1987, Maria transitioned from the adult film industry to fully embrace her passion for dance, adopting the name Maria Gitana and relocating to Chicago. She studied with the Spanish Dance Society and eventually earned a grant to study classical Spanish dance with Dame Marina Keet in 1992. Achieving the title of Maestra de Baile, she founded the flamenco dance troupe Manteca Colora and later Flamenco Gitana after returning to Washington in 1998.
Maria’s dedication to dance extended into the community, teaching classes and establishing youth arts programs recognized with several awards from the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture Affairs. She also contributed choreography to local theater productions. Sadly, Maria passed away from cancer on November 3, 2014, at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy of artistic passion and cultural enrichment.
