Benno Sterzenbach
Benno Sterzenbach (3 March 1916 – 13 September 1985) was a prominent German actor and director recognized for his contributions to both theater and film. Born in Osnabrück, he initially garnered attention for his compelling performance as Götz von Berlichingen alongside Ellen Schwiers as Adelheid at the Jagsthausen Festival, marking his significant stage debut.
Sterzenbach became widely known on television through his roles in adaptations of classic literary works, including Friedrich Dürrenmatt's *Der Richter und sein Henker* (1957), Albrecht Goes' *Der Schlaf der Gerechten* (1962), and Carlo Goldoni's *Mirandolina* (1963). His career took a tumultuous turn in 1941 when he was detained by the Gestapo on suspicions of espionage, a harrowing experience that influenced various themes in his later performances.
He made his film debut in 1948 with *Paths in Twilight*, directed by Gustav Fröhlich, and continued to build his filmography with notable works such as *Der Rächer* and *Es ist soweit* in 1960. Sterzenbach also starred in the pioneering German color television series *Adrian der Tulpendieb* in 1966. His portrayal of General Winston Woodrov Wamsler in the cult sci-fi series *Raumpatrouille – Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion* solidified his popularity. Additionally, he gained acclaim in France for his role as Major Achbach in the classic comedy *La Grande Vadrouille* alongside legends Louis de Funès and Bourvil. Beyond acting, Sterzenbach was also an accomplished author, contributing several books to the literary world.
