Norman Howell's journey into the world of film began at the tender age of fourteen when he found himself cast in the 1971 movie The Cowboys. It was here that he learned the art of stage combat from the iconic John Wayne, alongside the legendary stuntman Yakima Canutt, pioneers in crafting modern cinematic fight scenes. This formative experience ignited a passion for stunts that would soon overshadow his aspirations for acting.
As Howell’s career progressed, he became a sought-after stunt double, working with prominent actors such as John Travolta, Richard Chamberlain, Peter O'Toole, Bruce Willis, Mark Harmon, and Dirk Benedict. Notably, he served as Roger Moore’s stunt double in the James Bond film series, showcasing his versatility and skill in high-stakes action sequences.
Transitioning into stunt coordination, Howell made his mark with the film Footloose, but it was Kevin Costner who provided him with a significant opportunity as a stunt coordinator for Dances with Wolves. His talents extended beyond coordination; he also took on the role of second unit director for notable films like The Bodyguard, Open Range, and Mr. Brooks.
