Katy Jurado
Katy Jurado (January 16, 1924 – July 5, 2002), originally named María Cristina Estela Marcela Jurado García, was a prominent Mexican actress celebrated for her impactful performances on stage and screen. Rising to fame in the 1940s, Jurado transitioned to Hollywood where she became a key figure in Westerns during the 1950s and 1960s.
Throughout her illustrious career, she collaborated with iconic actors such as Gary Cooper in *High Noon*, Spencer Tracy in *Broken Lance*, and Marlon Brando in *One-Eyed Jacks*. She also worked under the direction of notable filmmakers including Fred Zinneman (*High Noon*), Sam Peckinpah (*The Wild Bunch* and *Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid*), and John Huston (*Under the Volcano*).
Over her career, Jurado appeared in a remarkable seventy-one films. She made history as the first Latina actress to receive an Academy Award nomination, recognized as Best Supporting Actress for her role in *Broken Lance* (1954). Additionally, she became the first Latina to win a Golden Globe. Despite her success, Jurado often found herself typecast in ethnic roles in American cinema. However, she enjoyed a wider range of characters in Mexican films, where she sometimes showcased her talents in singing and dancing, enriching her diverse artistic legacy.
