Edwin Richard Eckstein, widely known as Eddie, was born on November 29, 1939, in Johannesburg. He completed his education at Marist Brothers in Observatory, where he honed his skills before embarking on a career in banking as a clerk for five years. However, his passion for music led him to perform as a singer in his free time. Eddie gained initial recognition in the entertainment industry as a Rock 'n Roll artist with the Al Willox Quartet and made frequent appearances on Rhodesian television in the early 1960s alongside Flippie van Vuuren's band. He later joined the Jimmie Rayson Combo.

Following the breakup of The Bats, Eddie transitioned into a solo career, branching out as an actor and comedian. He notably portrayed Mannie Bloom in John Cundill's television series, "Oh George." His talents took him to Sydney, Australia, where he performed in the production "I Love My Wife." After returning to South Africa in 1983, Eddie became a prominent figure in theatre, taking on leading roles in various productions, including "Little Shop of Horrors," "Pyjama Tops," "Not Now Darling," "Grin and Bear It," and "What About Love." In December 1989, he also starred in a Christmas show titled "Cyclone Eddie" at the Wild Coast Sun, further solidifying his status in the entertainment scene.
