She gained widespread acclaim for her role as the second Doobsie in the popular SABC 2 soap opera "Muvhango" from 2004 to 2005. Mbau showcased her acting prowess as Mbali in the SABC 1 soap opera "Mzansi" and starred in the mini-series "After Nine." Khanyi's early life was shaped largely by her maternal grandparents in Mofolo, Soweto, as her mother, Lynette Sisi Mbau, worked at Barclays Bank and left her daughter in their care. Khanyi's father, Menzi Mcunu, was in a relationship with Lynette but did not have legal rights over her. He named her Khanyisile, meaning "one who brings light," a sentiment that resonates in her vibrant career.

Mbau's upbringing was influenced by her grandmother, whom she affectionately referred to as the "Queen of England" due to her strict yet nurturing household management and Western ideals. Today, Mbau is not just a celebrated figure in South African entertainment but also a testament to resilience and ambition in the face of life’s challenges.
