Naunton Wayne
Naunton Wayne (22 June 1901 - 17 November 1970) was a distinguished British character actor hailing from Llanwonno, South Wales. His educational journey took place at Clifton College, paving the way for a vibrant career in film and theater.
Wayne is perhaps best remembered for his memorable portrayal of Caldicott in Alfred Hitchcock's classic 1938 film, The Lady Vanishes. He reprised this iconic role in several subsequent films alongside his frequent collaborator, Basil Radford, who played the equally cricket-enthusiastic Charters. The duo became a beloved pairing in British cinema, appearing together in a variety of productions, including Crook's Tour (1941), Millions Like Us (1943), Dead of Night (1945), It's Not Cricket (1948), Quartet (1948), Passport to Pimlico (1949), and Night Train to Munich (1940), which served as a semi-sequel to their initial hit.
In addition to his notable collaborations, Wayne showcased his comedic talent in solo roles, featuring prominently in the Ealing comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953) and the thriller Obsession (1949). His contributions to film have left a lasting legacy, making him a cherished figure in the British entertainment industry, remembered for his wit and charm on screen.
