Frank Black, born Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV on April 6, 1965, is a prominent American musician celebrated for his role as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the groundbreaking alternative rock group Pixies. Known on stage as Black Francis, he gained notoriety for his unique vocal style, ranging from intense and passionate screeches with the Pixies to a more subdued and melodic approach in his solo endeavors.

After the Pixies disbanded in 1993, Black launched a solo career under the name Frank Black, releasing two albums with 4AD before forming a new backing band called Frank Black and the Catholics. Notably, he reunited with the Pixies in 2004, which reignited his career and allowed him to continue producing solo albums and touring. In 2007, he reverted to using the name Black Francis for his solo work.

His lyrics often delve into unconventional themes, exploring topics like surrealism, biblical violence, and science fiction, characterized by intricate meter signatures and the signature loud-quiet dynamic. His work has received acclaim from influential artists, including Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, the latter famously citing the Pixies as an inspiration for "Smells Like Teen Spirit." While his solo ventures and projects with the Catholics have not achieved the same level of recognition, Black remains a seminal figure in the alternative rock scene, continually pushing creative boundaries.
