His unique playing style and deep musical understanding helped shape the band's sound, which blended rock, folk, and jazz.

After the Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995, Lesh continued to honor the band's legacy through various projects, most notably Phil Lesh and Friends. This ensemble performed a mix of Grateful Dead classics, popular covers, and original compositions from its members, keeping the spirit of the band alive. Lesh also established Terrapin Crossroads, a music venue that served as a hub for live performances and community engagement. Although he reduced his touring commitments in 2014, he still performs selectively with Phil Lesh & Friends. From 2009 to 2014, he collaborated with former bandmate Bob Weir in the band Furthur.

Lesh's musical journey began with the violin, transitioning to trumpet during high school, where he immersed himself in various musical activities. He briefly attended San Francisco State University before turning to a career in music. His pivotal meeting with Jerry Garcia in the early 1960s led to his unexpected role as the bassist for the Grateful Dead, despite having no prior experience on the instrument. Lesh's contributions to music have left an indelible mark, making him a key figure in the evolution of American rock and improvisational music.
