Hugh Downs
Hugh Malcolm Downs (February 14, 1921 – July 1, 2020) was a prominent American broadcaster whose career spanned several decades, making him a familiar face on television from the 1940s until the late 1990s. Renowned for his versatility, Downs was an accomplished television host, news anchor, producer, author, game show host, and even a music composer.
His television journey began in the early days of broadcasting, but he gained significant recognition as the announcer and sidekick for "Tonight Starring Jack Paar," a role he held from 1957 to 1962. Subsequently, he became a co-host of the iconic NBC News program "Today," serving from 1962 to 1971, where he helped shape morning television. Downs also hosted the popular game show "Concentration" from 1958 to 1969, showcasing his ability to engage audiences across different formats.
Perhaps one of his most notable achievements was anchoring the ABC News magazine "20/20" from 1978 to 1999, where he earned a reputation for his investigative journalism and insightful interviews.
