Jerome Benton, born on September 19, 1962, is a multifaceted American performer renowned for his contributions as a backup dancer, comedic actor, and musician. He is particularly celebrated for his longstanding collaboration with the iconic funk band The Time, where he played a pivotal role both on stage and behind the scenes.

Benton’s connection to The Time is rooted in his familial ties, as he is the half-brother of bassist Terry Lewis. His memorable antics, exemplified by a humorous incident where he brought a mirror from the restroom to lead singer Morris Day during a performance, established him as a beloved comic foil within the group. In a notable 1983 concert in San Antonio, Benton was ingeniously tasked by Prince to mimic Lewis on stage with an unplugged bass, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the band.

His film credits include a prominent role in the 1984 cult classic Purple Rain, where he played Morris Day’s bodyguard, and he also appeared in Prince's Under the Cherry Moon. Despite The Time eventually disbanding as Day ventured into a solo career, Benton continued to work with Prince, joining the short-lived project The Family.

On December 13, 2003, Benton reunited with The Family for a charity performance, and in early 2007, the group announced plans for a new album and tour, signaling his ongoing influence in the music industry.
