Andy Whitfield (born 17 October 1971 – died 11 September 2011) was a Welsh-Australian actor and model celebrated for his iconic portrayal of Spartacus in the acclaimed Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which debuted in 2010.

Born in Amlwch, Anglesey, Wales, Whitfield pursued engineering at the University of Sheffield before transitioning to acting. He moved to Sydney in 1999, where he began to make his mark on Australian television with roles in series such as Opening Up, All Saints, The Strip, and Packed to the Rafters. His breakthrough came with the supernatural film Gabriel, which showcased his acting prowess and led to his casting in Spartacus. In this gripping retelling of the historical figure, Whitfield's Spartacus overcomes his death sentence to become a gladiator, ultimately leading a revolt against Roman authority.

Beyond his television work, Whitfield was involved in creative projects like a two-minute YouTube video titled "Time Crisis," produced with Freddie Wong. He also lent his voice to a brief role in the prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, which aired in 2011.

Tragically, Whitfield's promising career was cut short when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2010. Despite initial recovery, the cancer recurred, leading to his passing on 11 September 2011, just 18 months after his diagnosis. His legacy endures through his memorable performances and the impact he made on both audiences and the industry.
