John Gotti

1 title Acting Oct 27, 1940 Died: Jun 10, 2002 New York City, New York, USA

John Joseph Gotti Jr. (October 27, 1940 – June 10, 2002) was a prominent figure in organized crime, serving as the head of the Gambino crime family in New York City. After orchestrating the assassination of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in December 1985, Gotti ascended to control of what became known as the most formidable crime syndicate in America.

Gotti gained notoriety not only for his criminal activities but also for his flamboyant personality, earning the monikers "the Dapper Don" due to his stylish attire and charismatic media presence, and "the Teflon Don" because charges against him seemed to slide off without consequence. Despite facing three high-profile trials throughout the 1980s, all of which ended in acquittals, it was later uncovered that these cases were marred by jury tampering and intimidation tactics.

However, his downfall came when his underboss, Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, turned state's witness against him in 1991, driven by personal grievances after Gotti made derogatory remarks about him. This cooperation with federal authorities led to Gotti's conviction in 1992 for five murders, alongside charges of racketeering, conspiracy, and tax evasion, resulting in a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Gotti passed away from throat cancer on June 10, 2002, while incarcerated at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. His life remains a significant chapter in the history of organized crime in America.
