Leonard Smith (April 19, 1894 – October 20, 1947) was a prominent cinematographer whose extensive career spanned over three decades, culminating in more than 70 film credits from 1915 to 1946. He made his debut as a cinematographer with the silent film The Battle Cry of Peace, which unfortunately has been lost to time.

Throughout his professional journey, Smith occasionally contributed to the camera and electrical departments, showcasing his versatility within the film industry. His notable achievements began to accumulate in the 1940s, with his first nomination for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography (color) in 1942 for the film Billy the Kid, which he shared with fellow cinematographer William V. Skall. He received further nominations for Lassie Come Home in 1944 and National Velvet in 1946, highlighting his exceptional talent in color cinematography.

In a crowning moment of his career, just before his passing in 1947, Smith won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Yearling, sharing this honor with Arthur Arling and Charles Rosher. Notably, all of his nominations and accolades were in the color category.

In addition to his cinematic accomplishments, Smith served as the president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1941 until his untimely death at the age of 53. His contributions to the art of cinematography continue to be celebrated and remembered.
