Jeffrey Lau
Jeffrey Lau Chun-Wai (Chinese: 劉鎮偉) is a multifaceted talent in the Hong Kong film industry, known for his roles as an actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. After studying graphic design in the United Kingdom, he returned to Hong Kong to embark on a career in advertising. In 1980, he co-founded the film production companies Century Films and Wu Zhou Century Films alongside director Dennis Yu, where they created iconic films that marked the New Wave Cinema movement.
Lau's directorial debut came with the supernatural comedy The Haunted Cop Shop, supported by actor-producer Alan Tang. This film established Lau's unique approach to comedy and horror, resonating with audiences and contributing significantly to the popularity of these genres in Hong Kong Cinema. In 1997, Lau partnered with Corey Yuen to establish Cinemagic, further solidifying his influence in the industry. His production expertise was also instrumental in the success of Stephen Chow's hit film Kung Fu Hustle, released in 2004, which became a milestone in modern Hong Kong cinema. Jeffrey Lau remains a significant figure in the film industry, recognized for his contributions and innovative storytelling.
