Sofía Álvarez
Carmen Sofía Álvarez Caicedo, widely recognized as Sofía Álvarez, was a prominent Mexican actress and singer born on May 23, 1913, in Bogotá, Colombia. In 1928, she and her family relocated to Mexico, where she began forging her illustrious career. Álvarez made her film debut in 1930 with a minor role as a prostitute in "Santa," marking the advent of sound in Mexican cinema.
Affectionately referred to as "the lady of the long braids," she garnered immense popularity throughout the 1930s and 1940s, showcasing her talents both in acting and singing. One of her notable collaborations was with the legendary Mario Moreno Cantinflas in the classic film "Ahí está el detalle" (1940). During the 1940s, she became renowned for portraying sophisticated women in films such as "El sombrero de tres picos" and "México de mis recuerdos" (1943). Her partnership with iconic actor Pedro Infante produced memorable films, including "Si me han de matar mañana" (1946), "La barca de oro" (1947), and "Soy charro de Rancho Grande" (1947).
Among her celebrated works is the operetta film "La Reina de la Opereta" (1945). After a successful run in cinema, Sofía transitioned to a career as a radio singer in 1950. She returned to the silver screen from 1957 until her retirement in 1966, concluding her film career with "El Gángster" (1965) alongside Arturo de Córdova. Álvarez is remembered for her exquisite voice and the grace she brought to her roles before passing away on April 30, 1985, in Mexico City.
