Gertan Klauber
George Gertan Klauber (5 March 1932 – 1 August 2008) was a British actor of Czech heritage, celebrated for his memorable roles across film and television, particularly within the beloved Carry On series. Hailing from a Sudeten German and Jewish background, Klauber was born in Czechoslovakia and relocated to the UK just before World War II commenced. He honed his acting skills at the Birmingham School of Acting, now known as the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Throughout his career, Klauber made notable appearances in various television shows, often portraying quirky villains. His credits include guest roles in iconic series such as The Saint, The Professionals, and The Avengers. He was featured in Doctor Who twice, taking on the roles of The Galley Master in "The Romans" and Ola in "The Macra Terror." Additionally, he showcased his talent in the musical Pickwick for the BBC in 1969 and played a memorable waiter in "The Old Magic" episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?
Klauber's association with the Carry On films is particularly significant, as he appeared in seven installments, including a standout performance as 'Marcus' in Carry On Cleo (1964). He also ventured into the world of espionage, appearing in two James Bond films: Octopussy (1983) and the uncredited role in The Living Daylights (1987). His final film appearance was as a pimp in the Beatles biopic Backbeat (1994), marking the end of a diverse and impactful career.
