Jim Raschke

1 title Acting Oct 18, 1940 Omaha, Nebraska, USA

James Donald Raschke, widely known in the wrestling world as Baron von Raschke, is a retired American professional wrestler. His journey into wrestling began after a successful amateur career and service in the United States Army, leading him to debut in professional wrestling in 1966 as a referee in the American Wrestling Association (AWA). Quickly transitioning to the ring, Raschke utilized his local fame from amateur wrestling while initially competing under his real name. He later adopted the persona of Baron von Raschke, portraying a German character known for his imposing goose-step entrance and signature move, the "brainclaw," which became notorious in the wrestling community. His earlier finishing move, the "Prussian sleeper," showcased his technical skills with a unique twist on the traditional sleeper hold. His catchphrase at the time was, "I am ordered to win! I must win! And I will win!"

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Raschke captured numerous singles and tag team championships across various NWA and AWA territories. He also made a notable impact in the WWWF, where his claw hold was famously "censored" on television with a large red X due to its perceived violence. One of his most significant matches occurred in March 1977 at Madison Square Garden, where he faced WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Bruno Sammartino. Although he lost by disqualification, this match marked a critical moment in his career. In 1978, Raschke gained further acclaim as the inaugural NWA Television Champion. He later teamed with The Crusher to claim the AWA World Tag Team Championship in May 1984, before losing it to The Road Warriors that August.
