Rakim
William Michael Griffin Jr., born on January 28, 1968, is widely recognized in the music industry as Rakim, a pioneering American rapper. He gained fame as part of the iconic hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, who revolutionized the genre with their groundbreaking albums: *Paid in Full* (1987), *Follow the Leader* (1988), *Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em* (1990), and *Don't Sweat the Technique* (1992). Rakim later transitioned to a successful solo career, delivering four albums: *The 18th Letter* (1997), *The Master* (1999), *The Seventh Seal* (2009), and the upcoming *G.O.D.'s Network: Reb7rth* (2024).
Rakim is hailed as a transformative force in hip-hop, particularly for his innovative use of internal and multisyllabic rhymes. He shifted the genre's landscape from simpler, improvisational styles to more intricate and thoughtful lyricism. His technique has been so influential that fellow rapper Kool Moe Dee credited him with essentially inventing the concept of "flow" in rap music.
In recognition of his impact, *Paid in Full* was named the greatest hip-hop album of all time by MTV in 2006, and Rakim secured the No. 4 spot on their list of the Greatest MCs of All Time. He has consistently been celebrated for his lyrical prowess, with accolades placing him among the top MCs, including being ranked No. 1 in The Source's list of the "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time" in 2012.
