Lily Chakraborty, a revered Bengali actress, has made a significant mark in Indian cinema with her remarkable acting skills. Born on August 8, 1941, in Dhaka to Kesab Chandra Chakraborty and Dipti Chakraborty, she began her cinematic journey in 1958 with a supporting role in "Bhanu Pelo Lottery." Over the years, she became a familiar face in Bengali cinema, featuring in films like "Adwitiya," "Fuleswari," "Mukhjay Paribar," and "Janani."
In her illustrious career, Lily expanded her repertoire by acting in various regional films, including Malayalam, Bhojpuri, and Assamese films. Notable among her works is the 1970 Malayalam film "Priya," directed by Madhu, marking his directorial debut. The film, adapted from C. Radhakrishnan’s novel, featured Madhu as the hero alongside Lily.
Her collaborations with acclaimed directors like Gulzar and Satyajit Ray further solidified her status in the industry. In 1973, she appeared in Gulzar's poignant film "Achanak," starring Vinod Khanna, and in 1975, she contributed to the success of "Mausam." Lily's role as Lata Kumar Srivastav in the hit comedy "Chupke Chupke" (1975), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, remains memorable.
In 2009, she starred in the Assamese film "Basundhara," which won the National Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese, showcasing the ongoing relevance of her talent in contemporary cinema.
