In the summer of 1979, Ester relocates to Alta, Norway, to teach at a local elementary school, grappling with her Sámi identity and the shame surrounding it. She strives to blend in, even participating in derogatory humor about her own culture. A pivotal moment occurs when her cousin Mikkhal invites her to a protest camp along the Alta River, where activists rally against a dam project. As Ester witnesses the clash with police and hears her people's stories of oppression, she becomes inspired to join Mikkhal and others in a hunger strike in Oslo, finally embracing her heritage and fighting for justice.
