Plot

John, the owner of a vast chain of five-and-dime stores, relocates his family from Kansas City to New York, seeking greater success. Yet, his relentless work ethic drives a wedge between them. Jenny, his wife, feels isolated; son Avery is discontented with his job, while daughter Jennifer faces social rejection from the popular Muriel. At a charity event, Jennifer meets Berry, igniting a connection, but he is promised to Muriel, who is determined to keep him. Despite their marriage, both Berry and Jennifer are haunted by their unfulfilled feelings, leaving Avery to mourn the family's happier days in Kansas City.
