Plot

While vacationing in Yalta, banker Dimitri Gurov spots Anna Sergeyevna, a young woman walking her dog. Both are ensnared in loveless marriages—Dimitri's arranged, and Anna's with a dullard. They embark on a passionate affair, but when Anna returns to Saratov and Dimitri to Moscow, they believe it’s the end. Stricken by longing, Dimitri travels to Saratov, where he surprises her at a concert. Concerned about being discovered, Anna vows to visit him in Moscow. Their future hinges on whether they’ll risk their reputations for love or settle for fleeting hotel encounters.
