As the Continuation War ignited in the summer of 1941, Oulu became a playground for German soldiers, who charmed local women and captivated the town’s youth. Finnish boys found themselves entwined with the soldiers in various roles: trading goods, acting as interpreters, and even spying on romantic exploits while competing for the soldiers' attention. By autumn 1944, as the war drew to a close, the Germans departed, leaving behind a tangled web of fragile relationships, illegitimate children, and unresolved issues. The most devastating impact of their exit fell on young Jake, whose fate would leave a lasting mark.
