Plot
Tom Cardigan, a skilled but corrupt attorney with a penchant for alcohol, dominates the courtroom and consistently wins cases. His former benefactor, mobster Valentine Powers, enlists him to defend June Perry, a woman accused of prostitution. As Cardigan takes on the case, he unexpectedly finds himself falling for June, complicating his ambitions to become governor. With his sights set on a political future, he realizes he must choose between his feelings for her and the image of the perfect wife he needs to secure his aspirations.
