In the Republic of Utopia, a severe economic crisis leads to the scapegoating of the Jewish population. In response, the government enacts their expulsion. Leo Strakosch, who is betrothed to Counsellor Linder's daughter, finds a way to re-enter Utopia secretly. His mission is to confront the pervasive anti-Semitic sentiment and reveal the injustice of their actions. While the film adaptation diverges from Bettauer's novel, notably renaming Vienna to Utopia and adding a more optimistic conclusion, the core themes of prejudice and resilience remain powerfully intact.
