Colonial tea planter John Wiley, played by Peter Finch, returns to Ceylon after World War II with his new bride, the enchanting Ruth, portrayed by Dame Elizabeth Taylor. As they settle into their lavish plantation at Elephant Walk, Ruth initially revels in the exotic surroundings. However, her joy soon dims due to isolation as the sole white woman in the area, her husband's domineering nature, and a growing tension with plantation manager Dick Carver, played by Dana Andrews. Compounding her struggles, the local elephants harbor a deep-seated resentment, creating a constant atmosphere of danger.
