At Midwestern University, three educators face dismissal over accusations of communism, leaving mild-mannered English professor Tommy Turner in a precarious position. With trustee Ed Keller pressuring him not to read a provocative text in class, Tommy finds himself torn, especially after his wife, Ellen, advises him against it. Complicating matters, Ellen's former flame, football star Joe Ferguson, arrives for homecoming and whisks her away for a night of dancing post-rally. As tensions mount, Tommy grapples with the fear of losing Ellen to Joe, all while navigating the oppressive atmosphere of academic censorship.
