The film follows a Turkish teacher spending a year in a remote village, where he teaches the Turkish language to Kurdish children who don't speak it. With the teacher unable to communicate in Kurdish, he finds himself isolated in his own country, serving as a state authority amidst a foreign culture. "On the Way to School" explores the challenges of this language barrier and the loneliness he experiences while interacting with the children. Over the course of the school year, from September 2007 to June 2008, both the teacher and the students gradually learn to understand one another.
