Plot
Sophie is heartbroken when her love, Edmund, leaves after she is forced to marry the affluent Octavius. Years later, Edmund returns with his son William, sparking a romance between William and Sophie’s daughter, Marguerite. Complications arise when Marguerite’s sister, Marianne, also falls for William, while lowly carpenter Timothy harbors feelings for Marianne. After a violent altercation leads to a man’s death, Timothy flees to New Zealand with Edmund’s help. In a twist of fate, William, dishonorably discharged from the navy, drunkenly proposes to the wrong sister in a misguided letter to Octavius.
