An Inuit hunter speeds homeward on his sled, proudly carrying a freshly caught halibut, a symbol that threads through the narrative in both tangible and fantastical ways. In New York, Axel works as a naturalist’s assistant, content in his role until a messenger summons him to Arizona for his uncle's wedding, which turns out to be a ploy to draw him into the family business. In Arizona, Axel encounters two eccentric women—one vibrant yet emotionally needy, and the other affluent but despondent, who finds solace in playing the accordion for her collection of pet turtles.
