Plot
In a Shanghai apartment complex, Nationalist official Mr. Hou prepares to flee to Taiwan as the KMT faces impending defeat. His wife, Mrs. Hou, demands that all tenants vacate the property, which Mr. Hou plans to sell. Through their interactions, it's revealed that he seized the apartment from the original landlord, Mr. Kong, during the Sino-Japanese War. As tensions rise, tenants, including Mr. Kong, schoolteacher Mr. Hua and his wife, and the scheming Little Broadcast, initially aim to unite. However, their circumstances diverge, leading to Mr. Hua's arrest and his daughter’s grave illness.
