Derek Jarman’s "In the Shadow of the Sun" explores alchemical themes as a metaphor for the transformation of Super-8 film. He viewed the interplay of light and matter in cinema as “an alchemical conjunction,” using this concept to weave dreamlike symbolism through layered imagery and action. Initially titled "English Apocalypse," the film’s name comes from a 17th-century alchemical text, likening it to the elusive philosopher’s stone that transmutes base metals into precious ones. Jarman aimed to create an ambient video experience, similar to ambient music, intended to enrich the viewer's environment.
