The Best Bad Thing (1997)

Plot

Following her husband's passing, Mrs. Hata struggles to maintain her cucumber farm and seeks assistance. Rinko's mother insists that Rinko, age 12, spend the summer aiding her lifelong friend, Mrs. Hata. Initially dismissive of Mrs. Hata's traditional Japanese customs, Rinko views them as outdated. However, as the summer unfolds, she uncovers Mrs. Hata's strength and determination in the face of adversity. By summer’s end, Rinko not only grows to admire her but also fiercely defends her, embracing the very qualities she once deemed "crazy."
