Will Handy, raised in Memphis by his preacher father and Aunt Hagar, grapples with his musical talent as he yearns for a life beyond religious confines. Drawn to the vibrant sounds of the streets, he pens a campaign song for local politician Gogo, who persuades him to accompany her as a singer. Their collaboration leads Will to a successful career in blues, straining his relationship with his father. Years later, a reunion is sparked when Gogo invites Will’s family to New York, where they witness his compositions performed by a symphony orchestra, bridging the gap between father and son.
