A Thousand Clowns (1965)

Plot

Twelve-year-old Nick resides with his quirky Uncle Murray, a whimsical figure reminiscent of Mr. Micawber, who constantly anticipates the unexpected. Enter a social worker, who finds herself drawn to both Murray and Nick. As child welfare authorities pressure Murray to conform to societal norms to retain custody of Nick, the boy, who has cherished his uncle’s unconventional lifestyle, steps in as a peacemaker. However, Nick becomes troubled when he realizes that Murray might compromise his free-spirited nature for the sake of their bond, forcing the boy to confront the realities of adulthood and conformity.
