Oskar Matzerath is no ordinary child. Determined to avoid the outside world until his mother, Agnes, gifts him a tin drum, he chooses to stay in the womb, wary of the deceit and unfairness he perceives. On his third birthday, he promises never to mature. Against all odds, he fulfills this promise. As the Nazis gain control in Danzig, Oskar consciously decides to stay a child, fervently drumming and shouting in defiance of the turmoil that engulfs him.
