I Never Sang for My Father (1970)
Plot
A New York professor, portrayed by Hackman, seeks a fresh start by planning to marry his girlfriend and relocate to California. His mother acknowledges his desire for change but cautions that such a move might impact his aging father. Tragically, just before the wedding, she passes away. Hackman's estranged sister, who faces rejection from their father due to her interfaith marriage, encourages him to prioritize his happiness over their father's expectations. As he grapples with familial obligations and his own aspirations, the weight of responsibility becomes increasingly burdensome.
