Plot
Set in early 20th-century Sicily, the tale follows Salvatore, a destitute widower and farmer, who decides to journey to America with his family, including his elderly mother. Before their departure, they encounter Lucy, a woman claiming to be British, who wishes to return to the U.S. For reasons unknown, she seeks to marry before reaching Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore agrees to her proposal. Upon arrival, they face a quarantine while attempting to pass rigorous examinations to gain entry into the United States, with their fate resting in the hands of the customs officials.
