The Mikado (1939)

Plot

In a quaint Japanese village, Ko-Ko reluctantly takes on the role of executioner, facing the daunting challenge of carrying out his duty before the Mikado arrives in a month. He identifies Nanki-Poo, a heartbroken young man pining for the lovely Yum-Yum, as the perfect candidate for execution. Nanki-Poo consents to his fate, but only if he can enjoy his final days with Yum-Yum, who is unfortunately promised to Ko-Ko. This tangled web of love and duty sets the stage for a comedic and musical confrontation of desires and obligations.
