Plot

Set against the backdrop of post-emancipation Jamaica, Annette Cosway, a French colonist, struggles with poverty after marrying the prejudiced Englishman Paul Mason. Tragedy strikes when their young son dies in a fire ignited by former slaves, prompting Mason to abandon his devastated wife and their Creole daughter, Antoinette. As Antoinette grapples with her family's loss, she discovers that marrying is essential to secure her inheritance. She becomes infatuated with Rochester, an Englishman whose unsettling resemblance to her father raises questions about her fate and heritage.
