Plot
In early 20th-century Dublin, John Cassidy (Rod Taylor) grapples with poverty while striving for a better life amid social turmoil. Torn between family obligations and his dreams, he becomes entwined in the tumultuous tramway strike and forms a complicated relationship with the streetwise Daisy Battles (Julie Christie). His heart, however, belongs to Nora (Dame Maggie Smith), a bookshop assistant who inspires his literary ambitions. As Cassidy gains recognition at the Abbey Theatre, his progressive ideas create rifts with loved ones and challenge his identity, forcing him to confront the cost of his newfound success.
